EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Gladness does not come from special events. It arises when you give your whole attention to the simple act in front of you, the meal, the shared table, the ordinary hour. Singleness of heart is a mind no longer divided between here and elsewhere.

These people were not waiting for their lives to begin. They met each day and each other with undivided presence, and that is why the plainest food tasted like enough. When you stop reaching past this moment for a better one, the moment you are in becomes full, and gladness is simply the feeling of being fully here.

SUFISM

Sufism

A new community keeps two rhythms at once, the great house of worship and the small table at home, and holds them without a seam. The sickness this cures is the divided heart, holy in the temple and grasping at dinner, one face in the crowd and another in the kitchen.

The healing is that single-heartedness, gladness with nothing hidden underneath, the same person in the sanctuary and over the loaf. And God is met not only in the tall temple but at the ordinary table, wherever a meal is shared with undivided joy.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Steadiness under pressure gets built in private, on the ordinary days when nothing is happening.

Repeat a state often enough and the nervous system stops choosing it and starts defaulting to it. Gladness rehearsed over daily bread becomes the emotion a body returns to when the day asks nothing of it, and the emotion a person meets an event in decides what that event will mean.

Singleness of heart is the working part: a divided person carries two states at once and defaults back to the heavier one. What carried these people through the pressure coming for them was that habitual gladness, conditioned meal by meal, not the fire of the day that started it. Anyone waiting on a peak to feel glad hands most of their days to whatever emotion shows up uninvited, and those days are the life.

Live Acts 2:46 today

  1. Eat one thing today with no screen in front of you. Taste it. You will likely be surprised how long it has been since food had a flavor.
  2. At your next meal with other people, leave your phone in another room. The table gets noticeably warmer when nobody is half elsewhere.
  3. On a day so full that you are rushing through every task to get to the next one, pick one of them and do it at normal speed, all the way through. The day stops feeling like a hallway.

What was the last ordinary hour I was fully inside?

Zen

Asked for the secret, the teacher says: when you eat, just eat; when you walk, just walk. The whole practice is the absence of a divided mind.

Tao Te Ching 46

Whoever knows that enough is enough always has enough. The lack was in the reaching, not in the meal.
