EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

He was on a journey, absorbed in his purpose, sure of who he was and where he was going. And then, suddenly, a great light. Awakening often comes like this, not as the reward of long effort but as an interruption, a flooding of presence that stops the momentum of the thinking mind in a single instant.

The light shone round about him, everywhere at once, leaving nowhere for the old self to hide. This is what happens when awareness breaks through. The story you were rushing to finish halts, and you stand in a clarity that was always here, unnoticed only because you were too busy to see it. In that stillness a man can become new.

SUFISM

Sufism

A man rides out sure he is right, hurrying to do harm in good conscience, and at high noon a brighter light drops him. The fault is that hard certainty, the pride that never doubts its own road; a heart that bright inside has no room for the greater brightness. Being struck down is the cure it could not have chosen.

The light does not come from far away so much as break in from everywhere at once. God shows Himself where the traveler least expected, flooding the very road he thought he owned, so that a blindness becomes the start of real sight.

  1. Once today, in the middle of something ordinary, washing a cup, waiting for a page to load, stop moving for ten seconds and let the room be exactly as it is.
  2. When a conversation interrupts your plan for the morning, let the interruption be the thing that is happening rather than the obstacle to what you meant to be doing.
  3. If you are rushing toward something and a light turns red, let it stop you all the way instead of using the pause to check your phone.

What might be clear to you already if you slowed down enough to look?

Zen

Awakening is not earned by effort. It arrives like a sound in a still room, and the sitting only makes you quiet enough to hear it.

Sufism · Rumi

The wound is where the light gets in. What breaks your plan open is often what lets you see.

Tao Te Ching

Stop stirring the water and it clears on its own. Clarity is not something you make, it is what is already there when the churning stops.
