Acts 24:16 Meaning In This I Also Practice Always Having

In this I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men.

What does Acts 24:16 mean?

To keep a conscience clear toward life and toward others is not a burden of rules. It is what happens naturally when your actions flow from awareness rather than from the defending ego.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To keep a conscience clear toward life and toward others is not a burden of rules. It is what happens naturally when your actions flow from awareness rather than from the defending ego. The ego is the source of every offence, seeing others as separate and life as a thing to use.

This is a practice. In each moment you can notice whether you act from presence or from reactivity, and gently choose presence. Do this continually and a clear conscience is no longer something you strive for. It becomes the natural result of staying awake in what you do.

Live Acts 24:16 today

  1. At one point today, before you send the message or make the call, pause long enough to ask whether you are responding or defending yourself.
  2. If you were sharp with someone yesterday, say the plain sentence today: I was short with you and I am sorry. No explanation attached.
  3. Under pressure, when the shortcut would work and nobody would know, do the straight thing anyway, because you will know and that is the only audience that stays.

What small thing are you carrying that would be lighter if you just told the truth about it?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Check your motive before you act and you will rarely need to repair things after. The work is at the start, not in the apology.

Buddhism

Right action is not a list of rules kept under pressure. It is what naturally comes out of a mind that is clear, so the practice is clearing the mind.

Tao Te Ching

The one who acts without grasping leaves no mess behind. Nothing to defend, nothing to undo.
