Ego v. Being

The most important question a human can ask is not directed at some distant deity. Who art thou is the question of who you yourself are beneath the noise of thought and the roles you play.

And the answer is always the same presence: I am. The awareness aware in you is the same awareness in the one who confronts you. What your unconscious life had been fighting was never an enemy outside you. It was your deepest being, and the moment you turn toward it, the struggle ends, because you cannot make an enemy of what you recognize as yourself.

  1. Sometime today, before you reach for your phone, sit still for one minute and ask quietly who is here when the thinking stops. Do not answer with words. Just feel the plain fact that you are here.
  2. In the next conversation where you feel yourself bracing against someone, look at them for a second longer than usual and let it land that the same aliveness is awake behind their eyes. You can still disagree. You just stop fighting a stranger.
  3. When someone sends the message that spikes your heart rate, put the phone face down and feel your breath for three breaths before you type. The part of you that can watch the anger is not the anger.

Who is left in you when the arguing in your head goes quiet?

The same truth in other traditions

Chandogya Upanishad

The teaching ends in three words: you are that. What you have been searching for as something outside you turns out to be the awareness doing the searching.

Zen
