Strip away a person's reference points and they will build a verdict anyway, and despair builds fastest. Missing sun and stars proved nothing about drowning; they removed the instruments, and a crew without instruments still needs a conclusion, so one gets manufactured: the conclusion sets the state, the state drains the strength that steering and bailing require, and men who have concluded they are finished start working like men who are finished.

Hope taken away measures how much belief was running, all of it pointed at loss, all of it about a tomorrow nobody could see. What turned that ship was not the weather but one prisoner who ran the same power in the other direction and said so out loud, and the crew ate and worked before the sea changed anything. Giving up the state costs a person the exact actions that survival turns out to require.
