EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

In the middle of the storm, with the ship breaking and everyone certain of drowning, a still presence stands near. The circumstances have not changed. What has changed is that one man is aware of something steady that the chaos cannot touch.

Whose I am, and whom I serve. He knows himself not as the frightened body tossed by the waves but as belonging to the deeper reality standing beside him. That is the ground of true calm. When you know that your essence is not the situation but the awareness within it, the outer storm loses its power to define you, and peace becomes possible in the very middle of it.

  3. When a work crisis blows up in email, read it once, stand up, and feel your feet on the floor before you answer. The situation is real. It is just not who you are.

What in you has stayed standing through every storm you were sure would end you?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The mind that keeps itself quiet and its own is a citadel no event can storm. Outer things can bruise the body and leave the inner self untouched.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The self is not cut by weapons, burned by fire, soaked by water or dried by wind. The storm happens to everything except what you most truly are.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The still water at the bottom of a deep pool is not disturbed by the wind churning the surface. The depth is always there, whatever the weather does.
