Self-Help

Keep a lifeboat within reach and the ship gets only the effort your escape plan can spare.

Effort gets rationed the moment a second plan exists. Some part of the mind begins costing out the smaller option, and whatever is held back for it comes straight out of the work in front of a person.

Severed ropes turn staying aboard from a preference into the only available fact, and the only available fact gets everything a crew has. Survival had been promised to everyone who remained, and a promise pays nothing to a man with one hand already over the side. An exit kept within arm's reach costs the full strength the real work required.

  1. Look at one thing you are half in on and either close the escape route or admit you are out. The halfway version has been costing you more than either choice.
  2. Tell someone the plan out loud, with a date. Saying it to a real person removes the quiet exit you were keeping for yourself.
  3. When the hard task starts and your hand reaches for the phone, put the phone in another room. The escape does not have to be dramatic to drain the work.

What backup plan is quietly taking effort away from the thing in front of you?

The same truth in other traditions

Sun Tzu · Art of War 11

Troops placed where there is no way back fight with everything they have, because the option of retreat is what quietly drains an army.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Krishna tells Arjuna that the divided mind branches endlessly, while the resolute one is single and goes all the way through.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not try to hold every option is the one who ends up whole, because held options quietly spend what the work needed.
