Acts 3:1 · World English Bible
Peter and John were going up into the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.
Set hours are not a cage for prayer; they are what keeps prayer alive after feeling runs out. A fixed time kept whether or not the heart is warm turns devotion into something a person actually does instead of something he means to do.

ORTHODOX
Set hours are not a cage for prayer; they are what keeps prayer alive after feeling runs out. A fixed time kept whether or not the heart is warm turns devotion into something a person actually does instead of something he means to do.
Going up in company, at an hour others are keeping too, is the ordinary Christian shape. Praying alone is good, and the Church still prays as one body, which is what appointed hours are for: scattered people saying the same words at the same moment. Three in the afternoon already carried the memory of a death on a cross, so mercy was expected at that hour before anything unusual happened.

What do I only ever do when I feel like it, which is why I almost never do it?
The bell rings and you sit, whether you feel like sitting or not. Feeling is a weather that comes and goes; the schedule is what carries you through the stretches when nothing stirs.
There are set hours, and they are kept whether the heart is full or empty. Scattered people across the world turn at the same moments, so no one is ever doing it alone.
Remembrance is not waited for, it is practiced. The words are repeated at appointed times until the remembering begins to run under the whole day on its own.
