Acts 7:51 Meaning You Stiff-necked and Uncircumcised in Heart

You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.

What does Acts 7:51 mean?

A man surrounded by a hostile crowd names the thing at work in them: they always resist. Stiff of neck, closed of ear, they cannot receive what is trying to reach them, and neither could those before them.

Ego v. Being

A man surrounded by a hostile crowd names the thing at work in them: they always resist. Stiff of neck, closed of ear, they cannot receive what is trying to reach them, and neither could those before them. This is the ego defending itself, the mind so identified with its position that anything new registers only as a threat to be pushed away.

Resistance becomes a whole way of being turned against the present, not a single act. And what they were pushing away was not merely a man's words but the living awareness those words carried. When you harden yourself to what the moment is offering, you repeat the old pattern endlessly, deaf to the very thing that could set you free.

  1. Read a message that annoyed you a second time, slowly, looking for the one part that might be fair before you draft anything back.
  2. In a disagreement with someone close, ask one honest question and let their whole answer land before you speak. No rebuttal while they are still talking.
  3. When criticism comes in a meeting and your whole body wants to defend, say thank you, I need to think about that, and actually think about it later.

What have you been pushing away so long that you no longer hear what it is saying?
