CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The strong man trusts his strength until the day it fails him. Then he learns how little it was ever holding up. Courage built on muscle and reputation strips off the moment the ground shifts, and the bravest are exposed as the most afraid. What looked like character was only good fortune wearing its mask.

Strength that has never met its own limit has never been tested. The nakedness is the truth arriving late. A man discovers what he is made of when everything external is torn away. If he built himself on force alone, that day shows him no one was ever home. Build on what holds when the strength goes.

Live Amos 2:16 today

  1. Think about what you quietly lean on for your sense of being fine, maybe your job title or how fit you are or who replies to your texts. Sit with how you would feel without it.
  2. Admit one thing you are not actually good at to someone, out loud, instead of steering the conversation around it. The relief is usually immediate.
  3. When something goes wrong today, a delayed flight or a cancelled plan, watch how fast your calm leaves you. That speed tells you how much of it was circumstance.

If everything you point to as proof of your strength were gone tomorrow, who would be left?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The hard and rigid thing breaks, while the soft and yielding thing lasts. What looks like strength is often just brittleness that has not met its load yet.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca said we should ask of our comforts what they would look like taken away, because nobody knows what he can bear until he has lost the props. Untested fortune is not the same as character.

Bhagavad Gita

Krishna points Arjuna away from outcomes and toward what is unshakable in him, since every external support belongs to change. Build on the part that does not depend on winning.
