EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The power that shapes the mountains and creates the wind, that turns morning into darkness and treads the high places of the earth, is not far off in the sky. It is the formless source of every form. And it also declares to a man his own thought.

When a thought arises and you become aware of it, that awareness is not a small thing shut inside your head. It is the same intelligence that forms the mountains and creates the wind, now looking out through you. The awareness in you that notices a thought and the power that made the mountains are not two different things.

SUFISM

Sufism

The One who raises mountains also reads the small thought a person believes is locked inside his own skull. It is a secret conceit to treat the inner life as a private room no one enters. Bringing one buried motive honestly into the open, before the One who already knows it, ends the pretense.

Peak, wind, and dawn are each a face turned toward the same maker. The world is no machine running alone; it is a showing, where the Maker of the heights forms the weather inside a heart.

Live Amos 4:13 today

  1. When you catch a worried thought today, watch it the way you would watch a cloud go by. That watching is not small and it is not yours alone.
  2. Step outside once and look at the sky or a tree for thirty seconds, then feel that the same aliveness is here inside you looking back. It makes the day roomier.
  3. In a tense meeting, instead of defending yourself, feel the awareness that is calmly registering the whole room, including your own reaction. You can speak from there.

If the awareness in you is not something you made, where do you think it came from?

The same reality that holds the sun and the stars is the reality in the space of your own heart. There is not a large one out there and a small one in here.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 25

The way is vast enough to form heaven and earth, and it is also what moves quietly in you. One source, many shapes.

Sufism · Ibn Arabi

The one you are looking for is nearer than your own thinking. The awareness looking out of your eyes is borrowed from the whole.
