Colossians 1:17 Meaning He Is Before All Things

He is before all things, and in him all things are held together.

What does Colossians 1:17 mean?

Everything that exists is being carried, this moment, by a hand it did not earn and cannot see. The self-made person forgets this and takes the credit, mistaking borrowed steadiness for his own strength.

SUFISM

Sufism

Everything that exists is being carried, this moment, by a hand it did not earn and cannot see. The self-made person forgets this and takes the credit, mistaking borrowed steadiness for his own strength. That forgetting is the rust that dulls the heart until it reflects only itself.

The cure is grateful remembrance worn like a habit: to receive each ordinary morning as a gift held open, not a thing owned. A clear stream makes none of its own water. Trace any solid thing back far enough and the same One is holding it.

Live Colossians 1:17 today

  1. Before you get out of bed, say thanks for one specific thing you did nothing to earn, the heat being on, the body working, somebody still being alive. Keep it short enough to actually do tomorrow.
  2. Tell one person today what they hold up for you that you have never said out loud. Be specific, not general. Name the thing they do.
  3. When you catch yourself taking credit for how well something went, add the part you left out, the luck, the timing, the people who covered for you. Say it in the room, not just in your head.

What steadiness have I been calling my own strength?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 34

The Tao holds everything up and asks for no credit, which is exactly why people forget it is there. Being carried quietly feels like standing on your own.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said we are given everything on loan, our bodies, our people, our days, and the giver may ask for any of it back. Gratitude is the right posture for a borrowed thing.

Judaism · daily blessings

The tradition puts a short blessing on ordinary acts, waking, eating, washing, so the day does not pass as though it were owed to you. The habit is small on purpose, because it has to survive every morning.
