Colossians 2:13 Meaning You Were Dead Through Your Trespasses

You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,

What does Colossians 2:13 mean?

Dead people do not meet anyone halfway, and their sins had put them in that state. Lacking the mark that declared a man inside the LORD's covenant people, they stood outside it with no claim on Him.

PROTESTANT

Dead people do not meet anyone halfway, and their sins had put them in that state. Lacking the mark that declared a man inside the LORD's covenant people, they stood outside it with no claim on Him. God gave them life instead, joined to Christ, so that the life the risen Christ holds is now theirs.

The word behind "forgiven" means to cancel a debt as a favor, not to overlook a fault, and "all" leaves nothing on the books for later. That canceled debt is what their life now stands on, granted before they had anything to offer.

Sin leaves a corpse, not a patient. A corpse contributes nothing to its own rescue, so the first move toward God comes from God; the free response that follows is real, and it too is carried by grace.

The new life comes with Christ, not merely from him. Baptism is where that joining to his rising happens, which is why the Church treats it as a real death and a real resurrection rather than a picture of one. The forgiveness has no limit placed on it, covering every trespass rather than a manageable selection of them.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To be dead in your sins is to be alive in body yet asleep in spirit, moving through your days run by old conditioning, reacting without ever being present. It is a kind of sleep, a life lived entirely in the head, cut off from the aliveness of this moment.

To be quickened is to wake up. Something in you comes alive that was dormant, and you feel the presence that was always underneath the thinking. And the past, all those trespasses, loses its grip, because a self that lives fully in the present is no longer carrying and defending the story of what it did. You come alive, and the weight of the past falls away.

  1. When you catch yourself making a case for why you deserve to be okay, stop building it. Nothing was on the books before you had anything to offer, and nothing is on the books now.
  2. Cancel something somebody owes you, the money, the favor, the apology you are still waiting on. Tell them it is gone, and mean it as a gift rather than as a point scored.
  3. When the old thing surfaces at two in the morning, the thing you think disqualifies you, say that it is already paid and go back to sleep. All means there is nothing left to settle later.

What do you keep paying on that has already been marked settled?

He taught that the rescue is other power, not self power, because the one needing it cannot generate it. You receive what you could never produce.

The cup was empty, which is the only reason it could be filled, and the pouring was not its own doing. Emptiness is the whole qualification.

Hinduism · Srivaishnavism

One school compares it to the kitten carried by the scruff rather than the monkey clinging on with its own grip. The one being carried contributes no hold of its own.
