Colossians 2:9 Meaning For in Him All the Fullness

For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily,

What does Colossians 2:9 mean?

A spring runs vast underground, but a person drinks only where it breaks the surface within reach. Here the whole depth of God gathers into one visible form, not thinned by the descent but present in full, the endless source made touchable at one spot.

SUFISM

Sufism

A spring runs vast underground, but a person drinks only where it breaks the surface within reach. Here the whole depth of God gathers into one visible form, not thinned by the descent but present in full, the endless source made touchable at one spot. The fault this cures is the notion that the sacred must stay abstract and far, too high to meet in flesh and time.

The remedy is to come close and drink. God is present not as a rumor beyond the world but poured wholly into a place a thirsty hand can reach.

Live Colossians 2:9 today

  1. Drink your coffee without your phone in your other hand. One ordinary thing, met fully, is where the depth actually shows up.
  2. Give someone your whole face for five minutes today. No screen in your lap, no half ear on something else. Presence is not abstract; it arrives in a body sitting in a chair.
  3. Stuck in traffic or standing in the grocery line, stop treating this stretch as the dead part of the day. The thing you keep hoping to find somewhere higher is available right here, at the checkout.

What have you been waiting to find somewhere grander than where you already are?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · Layman Pang

He said his daily miracle was carrying water and chopping wood, nothing more. The sacred is in the ordinary body doing ordinary things, where your hands already are.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The Way is in the ant, in the broken tile, in the dung. There is no place too plain or too low to hold the whole of it.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 11

Arjuna asks to see the vastness and then cannot bear it, and begs for the familiar face back. What is boundless meets us in a form small enough to stand in front of.
