Colossians 3:1 Meaning If Then You Were Raised Together

If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God.

What does Colossians 3:1 mean?

A self that has left an old life behind naturally lifts its aim. Once the low picture is dropped, the mind reaches instead for the higher target and holds its gaze there, where the pattern it means to grow into already sits complete.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A self that has left an old life behind naturally lifts its aim. Once the low picture is dropped, the mind reaches instead for the higher target and holds its gaze there, where the pattern it means to grow into already sits complete. Attention climbs toward whatever it keeps in view.

The seeking is the whole point. When a person fixes the imagination on the finished, elevated version of what they are becoming, the goal-striving machinery turns that way and begins to carry the life upward. A mind kept on things above slowly reshapes the man below into their likeness.

Live Colossians 3:1 today

  1. Decide one picture of the person you are becoming and hold it for a minute before you get out of bed. Not a plan, just the picture.
  2. Spend time today with one person who already lives the way you are aiming at, even if it is just a text or a long call. Attention climbs toward what it keeps near.
  3. When the day drags your attention down into something petty, a snide comment, a slow line, a bad reply, lift your eyes back to the larger thing on purpose. Keep returning to it as many times as it takes.

What are you keeping in view, and is it the thing you actually want to grow into?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

A person becomes what they steadily keep before the mind. Aim low and the life settles there; aim high and it climbs.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Hold a picture of the person you mean to be, then measure your days against that and not against the crowd. The pattern comes first, the progress after.

Zen

The arrow goes where the eye rests. Watch the target, not the ground.
