Colossians 3:22 Meaning Servants

Servants, obey in all things those who are your masters according to the flesh, not just when they are looking, as men pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God.

What does Colossians 3:22 mean?

ʿUbūdiyyah: Being God's servant Ibn Arabi treats servanthood as the highest standing a person can hold. Someone who takes orders all day can start to feel that their whole worth sits in another person's hands. Knowing you answer to God first does not remove the orders, but it changes who you belong to while you carry them out.

Niyyah: The intention behind an act A saying of the Prophet holds that actions count by the intention behind them. Two people can do the same task equally well and still be doing two different things inside. One is buying approval; the other is handing the work over to God, which makes even dull hours count for something.

Riyāʾ: Doing good so that people will see it Al-Ghazali treats showing off as a hidden form of idolatry, since it puts other people in the place that belongs to God. Effort rises when eyes are on you and drops when they leave, which is tiring and leaves a person feeling hollow. Almost nobody decides to work for show; you slide into it without ever making a choice.

Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity, one motive and no other Al-Ghazali describes it as clearing everything out of an act except God. Motives usually come mixed: some care for the work, some hunger for credit, some fear of trouble. Sincerity does not demand perfect feelings, only that the deciding reason is one, so the work holds steady whether you are thanked or ignored.

Worship God as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, He sees you: one witness never leaves The Prophet gave this answer when asked what excellence in religion means. It meets the gap most people live in, where the quality of their effort shifts depending on who is watching. Holding one steady witness in mind closes that gap, and a person stops keeping a public version of their work and a private one.

Live Colossians 3:22 today

  1. Pick one task today that nobody will inspect, answering a dull email, putting the dishes away, filling in a form properly, and do it to the same standard you would if your boss were reading over your shoulder.
  2. When you help someone today, a coworker, your partner, a stranger holding a door, resist the small urge to mention it later in the group chat. Let it stay between you and the act.
  3. In the meeting where you feel judged, or the moment your manager walks past your screen, keep working at exactly the pace you had thirty seconds earlier. Same speed when they leave.

Where does my effort change depending on who is in the room?

Bhagavad Gita

Krishna tells Arjuna to do the work that is his to do and let go of any claim on what it earns him. The act stays the same; what changes is that it is offered rather than traded.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He reminds himself that a good person does good the way a vine bears grapes, without an audience and without asking who saw. The quality of the deed does not depend on anyone watching it.

Pirkei Avot

The sages taught doing what is right not for reward and not from fear of punishment, but because it is right. One motive, held steady, outlasts both.
