There are different kinds of knowing. One kind masters facts and skills, the learning that can be written down and tested. But there is another kind, rarer and harder to explain, that understands the strange pictures that rise up in dreams and visions.

This second gift treats the images of the night as a language worth learning, not as nonsense to be shrugged off in the morning. The one who has it can listen to what the deeper mind is saying through its symbols. Both kinds of knowledge matter, but only the second one lets a person hear the parts of themselves that never speak in plain words.

Live Daniel 1:17 today

  1. Keep your phone out of reach for the first two minutes after you wake and write down whatever scrap of a dream is still there, even one odd image. The scroll erases it faster than sleep does.
  2. Tell someone at dinner about a dream you had, not as a funny story but as something you are actually wondering about. See what they hear in it that you missed.
  3. When you are stuck on a decision at work today, let the question sit overnight instead of forcing an answer in the meeting. Say you will come back to it tomorrow.

What has your sleeping mind been telling you that you keep deleting by nine in the morning?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly and woke unsure which was the dreamer. He treated the question as real rather than as a joke about sleep.

Judaism · Talmud, Berakhot

The Talmud says a dream left uninterpreted is like a letter left unread. The message arrived; someone still has to open it.

Sufism · Ibn Arabi

Ibn Arabi taught that the imaginal images that visit us are a genuine world with its own meaning, not leftovers of the day. Learning their language is a discipline, not a hobby.
