A standard settled before the pressure arrives is the only kind that survives the pressure.

Most people decide what they will tolerate while the pressure is already on them, which is why they lose. A line fixed in advance becomes a must, and a must ends the internal argument; with nothing left to negotiate, the state stays clear, and a clear state looks for a route instead of an excuse.

Purpose first, request second, because the asking only becomes possible once the deciding is done. For a man who has already made the what non-negotiable, a workable alternative shows up that nobody thought to offer, since he is the only one in the room asking for one. Leave it a should and he dines at the king's table, calling appetite necessity for the rest of his life.

Live Daniel 1:8 today

  1. Decide tonight, in writing, one thing you will not do this week no matter who asks, and make it specific enough that there is nothing to interpret later.
  2. When someone offers you something you have already decided against, say no once, warmly, and then ask what else might work instead of explaining yourself.
  3. In the moment when everyone around you is going along with something you know is wrong, hold your line quietly and look for a third option rather than arguing about the two on the table.

What have I left as a maybe that needs to become a settled no before the pressure finds me?

Stoicism · Epictetus

Decide now what kind of person you intend to be, then keep it like a law you did not write. Deciding in the moment is how people lose.

Buddhism · the precepts

The precepts are taken in advance, in calm, precisely because they are needed in heat. A vow settles the question so the moment does not have to.

Tao Te Ching 64

Deal with a thing while it is still small and before it arrives. Trouble handled early needs no struggle later.
