PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Even people who have grown wise are not spared hard falls. In fact the falling is part of how they are changed. A person is refined the way rough metal is worked in fire, and the fire is not comfortable. What burns away is everything false and unearned in him.

This kind of change cannot be rushed. It has its own slow timing, and much of the growth happens through the very stumbling a person would rather avoid. The suffering is not a punishment and not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is the pressure under which a fuller, truer self is slowly formed, and it lasts as long as that forming actually takes.

  2. When a friend tells you about a hard stretch they are in, resist jumping to advice. Say that it sounds heavy, and that it sounds like it is still going, and leave the room for it.
  3. In the middle of a stressful week, drop the running commentary that this should already be over. Say to yourself, this is taking the time it takes, and get on with the next small thing.
