Daniel 12:10 · World English Bible

Daniel 12:10 Meaning Many Will Purify Themselves

Many will purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked will do wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand; but those who are wise will understand.

What does Daniel 12:10 mean?

The same trial sorts people in two directions, and the difference is whether they are willing to face themselves. Those who undergo the slow purifying come out with something the others lack, a real understanding of what has happened to them and why.

Psychoanalysis

The same trial sorts people in two directions, and the difference is whether they are willing to face themselves. Those who undergo the slow purifying come out with something the others lack, a real understanding of what has happened to them and why.

Those who refuse keep acting out the same harm without ever seeing it. This is not mainly a matter of cleverness. A person only understands what he has actually lived through and worked on inside himself. So the meaning of the whole ordeal stays hidden from anyone who will not enter it, and becomes clear only to the one who does the inner work, because that understanding is exactly what the work produces.

Live Daniel 12:10 today

  1. Take the thing you keep reading about and avoiding doing, the apology, the appointment, the budget, and take the first real step today. Ten minutes of the actual thing beats another hour of research.
  2. When you catch yourself explaining a problem you have not sat with to someone who is living it, stop talking and ask them what it is actually like. Let them teach you.
  3. When something goes badly today, ask yourself one honest question about your own part in it before you build the case against anyone else. Keep it to yourself, you are only looking.

What are you hoping to understand without having to live through it?

Zen

Nobody can hand you the taste of water. You drink or you stay thirsty, and no amount of explanation crosses that gap.

Sufism · Rumi

You can describe the sweetness of honey all day to someone who has never had it. Understanding arrives on the tongue, not through the ear.

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not enough to read about the training. The one who does the work knows something the clever talker never will, and no shortcut exists.
