PSYCHOANALYSIS
When a man holds great power, his inner life often goes unattended. Sleep is where the neglected part of him speaks. A ruler who commands everything he can see may still be gripped by something rising from within that will not let him rest. The dream is not an accident of a bad night. It is the deeper mind pressing a message on someone who has stopped listening to it.
His troubled spirit shows the balance has tipped too far toward outer control. The restless nights are the mind's own way of forcing him to turn around and face what he has been ignoring.

BUDDHISM
Uddhacca-kukkucca: Restlessness and Worry Agitation paired with fretting, one of the five hindrances. A man who can order the execution of anyone in Babylon cannot order his own eyes to close, and the whole apparatus of empire is useless against a single bad night. Images passed and were gone by midnight; the mind kept going over the same ground until dawn and arrived nowhere.
Bhava-taṇhā: Craving to Keep Existing Thirst for one's own continuation. Two years into a reign is barely a beginning, and everything in him wants the throne to run on without a last page, so a night that hints otherwise cuts straight at the wanting. Nothing in Babylon has changed by morning: no border moved, no army lost, and still he cannot rest, because the wound is to a wish.
Māna: Conceit The "I am" that measures itself. Wear a crown long enough and it stops feeling like an object and starts feeling like skin, until "my kingdom" and "myself" are one word with two halves. A picture in the night can then reach a man no army could get near, striking the place where the throne is holding his name.
Anicca: Impermanence Whatever is put together comes apart. Dating the trouble to the second year of a reign counts something that started, and what starts finishes; the gold, silver, bronze and iron waiting inside that dream are the same count laid out in metals, one giving way to the next. His sleep goes because some part of him has already done the arithmetic and does not want the answer.
Saṃvega: The Urgency a Shock Brings The jolt that turns a person toward what matters. Wise men will be summoned at first light to explain the disturbance away, which is what usually happens to a spirit stirred like this: an interpreter is hired, and the shaking stops. A sleepless night with the ground moving underfoot is worth more than sound sleep on a throne, provided the shaking is allowed to finish its work.
Psychoanalysis lens
What keeps coming up when you finally stop moving, and how long have you been outrunning it?
Mastering others is one kind of strength; knowing yourself is another and rarer one. A person can govern everything outside and still be a stranger at home.
Seneca wrote that we are all busy chasing outward things while the inner life goes untended, and that the crowded mind pays for it in sleepless nights. Retreat into yourself is not a luxury but maintenance.
The Dhammapada says the untrained mind is a worse enemy than any outside foe. What you refuse to look at inside does not go away; it waits.
