Daniel 4:10 Meaning Thus Were the Visions of My Head

Thus were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the middle of the earth; and its height was great.

What does Daniel 4:10 mean?

The visions of the head, seen while the body rests, are the inner drama shown in the one place it ever happens, inside your own skull. The great tree at the center of the earth is the creative power planted in the middle of a person, God descending into the human form and growing to full height there.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The visions of the head, seen while the body rests, are the inner drama shown in the one place it ever happens, inside your own skull. The great tree at the center of the earth is the creative power planted in the middle of a person, God descending into the human form and growing to full height there. It stands at the center because everything a person experiences branches out from that single hidden life.

The tree will be cut down in the story that follows, and that felling is not loss. God comes down into creation as the cut tree and rises again individualized as a man. After the body's furnace of experience, the stump gives up a golden liquid light, the life that was always at the root. What looks like a dream in the night is the pattern of the self being buried and raised. The one dreaming the tree is the tree, and he will wake to know it.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

A great tree stands at the center of the world, its top reaching the sky and its roots sunk deep into the ground. Such an image appears again and again in dreams and old stories, always standing for a life that is growing into its full shape.

A tree does not build itself by effort; it grows by a law of its own, drawing from the dark soil below and the light above at the same time. That is a fair picture of what happens inside a person over the years. The deepest and the highest parts feed one growth, and the self a person is meant to become rises slowly from it, on its own, unless it is cut down.

Live Daniel 4:10 today

  1. Sit for three minutes and let your attention travel from the room, past your thoughts, back to whoever is doing the watching. Rest there, at the center, and let the day branch out from it.
  2. When a friend tells you about their circumstances, listen for the one root belief underneath all the details. You will usually hear the same note three or four times. Ask about that, kindly, instead of the details.
  3. In a tense moment at work, feel for your own center, your feet on the floor, your breath, the plain awareness behind your eyes. Answer from the trunk, not from the shaking leaves.

If everything in your life grows from one hidden root, what is growing there now?

The same truth in other traditions

Katha Upanishad

The text speaks of a tree with its root above and its branches below, the whole visible world hanging from an unseen source. The center is not out there among the leaves.

Chandogya Upanishad

The teacher splits open a tiny seed and shows that the great tree was hidden in something too small to see. In the same way, what you are is folded invisibly inside you.

Zen

The teachers say to turn the light around and look back at the one who is looking. The whole drama you call your life is playing in that one place.
