EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The proud words are still on the king's lips when everything he claimed is taken. The kingdom departs in the same breath he was boasting. So swiftly can the ego fall. What a man builds his whole sense of self upon can dissolve between one word and the next.

Nebuchadnezzar had mistaken the passing form of his power for who he was. Life loosens that grip, often at the very height of the boast. When the outer kingdom is stripped away, a person is finally handed the chance to find what he is beneath it, which no voice can take.

Live Daniel 4:31 today

  1. Name quietly the one thing whose loss would feel like losing yourself: a job, a role, a number, a relationship. Sit with it for a minute and ask what would still be here, breathing, if it went.
  2. Today, tell one person something about yourself that is not an accomplishment. Something plain and unimpressive and true.
  3. When a piece of bad news lands, an email, a text, a number on a screen, give it thirty seconds before you react. Feel your feet, feel the breath, and let the ground under you be the thing that holds, not the news.

What have I quietly been using to prove that I exist?

Buddhism · Anicca

Everything assembled comes apart. A thing can hold together for forty years and dissolve in an afternoon, so the one who leans his whole weight on it is leaning on smoke.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

All of this is already changing as you look at it. Fame, office, the body itself: a river that happens to be passing where you stand.

Sufism · Attar, The Conference of the Birds

The birds cross the world to find the king and arrive to see their own faces in him. The seeking self had to be spent entirely before it could learn it was never separate.
