Daniel 9:24 · World English Bible

Daniel 9:24 Meaning Seventy Weeks Are Decreed on Your People

Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to finish disobedience, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy.

What does Daniel 9:24 mean?

Every result here is God's own doing, decreed over His people and their city. He ends their long rebellion, does away with their sins, and covers their guilt.

PROTESTANT

Protestant

Every result here is God's own doing, decreed over His people and their city. He ends their long rebellion, does away with their sins, and covers their guilt. The yearly atonement blood, carried behind the curtain, held for a year and came due again; Christ's death ends that repeat.

Sealing vision and prophecy means God brings His foretold word to its goal rather than leaving it open. Anointing the most holy sets apart the place where God meets His people. The everlasting righteousness He brings in is a standing He supplies and they receive by trusting Him.

Live Daniel 9:24 today

  1. Stop re-opening the thing you already brought to God. If it was dealt with, going back to it every Tuesday is not honesty, it is a receipt you keep re-reading.
  2. Tell someone who is stuck on their own failure that the matter is closed, and resist adding a condition to it. No instalment plan.
  3. When you blow it today, in traffic, in an email, with your kid, deal with it quickly and do not carry it into the next hour. Repeat penance is the old way, not the new one.

What are you still trying to cover that was already covered once and for all?

The same truth in other traditions

Judaism · Yom Kippur

The day comes every year because the covering it provides runs out, and the people return to the same altar with the same need. A yearly remedy admits it is not final.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 18

Krishna tells Arjuna to let go of all other duties and take refuge in him, and promises to do the freeing himself. The freeing is his work, not the work of the one freed.

Sufism

The debt the lover owes is beyond paying, so the Beloved settles it and calls the lover clean. What is given is a standing, not a wage.
