Self-Help

When the way is already open, fear is the only thing left that can keep a person out of it.

Fear manufactures the obstacle it claims to be reporting. The eyes send back giants, the body floods, the flooded state offers one option, which is to wait, and the waiting becomes the reference that the thing could never have been done anyway. That is how a line drawn inside a man gets mistaken for a line on the map.

God settles the question of possibility first and leaves only the question of state. A generation that refuses to test a fence keeps every opinion it holds about what stood on the other side, and pays for that comfort with the rest of its life in the wilderness.

Live Deuteronomy 1:21 today

  1. Pick the one thing you have been circling for weeks and take the first small step today, the message sent, the number dialed, the form opened. You will learn more in those two minutes than in two more months of thinking about it.
  2. Tell one person what you have been avoiding and ask them to check in tonight. Saying it out loud to someone shrinks it faster than any amount of private planning.
  3. When the fear hits in the meeting or on the call, move your body first, sit up, breathe out slowly, put your feet flat on the floor, then speak. The body decides what the moment feels like, and you can change the body in five seconds.

What have you been treating as a wall without ever once walking up and pushing on it?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. Most of what stops a person was never on the road, only in the head that was looking at it.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Arjuna stands before the battle already defeated, undone by the picture he is holding rather than by any enemy. The teaching is not to shrink the field but to stand up and act in it.

Zen

A student says the gate is locked. The teacher says you have not pushed it. The fence a person refuses to touch stays a wall forever.
