Deuteronomy 10:12 Meaning Now

Now, Israel, what does Yahweh your God require of you, but to fear Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, and to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

What does Deuteronomy 10:12 mean?

The word "but" is the whole medicine. A heart makes faith heavy by piling on shows of devotion meant to be seen, and this strips it to a few plain things: awe, a life that walks His ways, love, honest service.

Sufism

The word "but" is the whole medicine. A heart makes faith heavy by piling on shows of devotion meant to be seen, and this strips it to a few plain things: awe, a life that walks His ways, love, honest service. The cure is to do the simple asked thing in private and let the display fall away.

What looks like a long list is one motion of a single heart turned toward its Lord, who asks so little and so much at once because He wants the person, not the show.

Live Deuteronomy 10:12 today

  1. Do one plain, useful thing today and tell no one: wash the dishes you did not dirty, send the money, make the call. Let it be finished without a photo or a mention.
  2. With someone you live or work with, help in a way they will never trace back to you. Refill the thing, fix the small annoyance, clear the mess, and let them think it was always like that.
  3. When a day gets tight and you want credit for carrying it, drop the sentence you were building in your head about how much you do. Just carry the next ten minutes.

What would I still do today if there were no chance of anyone finding out I did it?

Tao Te Ching 38

The highest goodness does not advertise itself. Once kindness starts keeping score and looking for an audience, something has already leaked out of it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He told himself to stop debating what a good person is like and simply be one. The arguing is often a way of putting off the plain thing.

Judaism · Maimonides

He ranked ways of giving and put near the top the gift where the giver and the receiver never learn each other's names. The good deed stays whole when nothing can be collected for it.
