Tawḥīd: God's oneness Tawḥīd means one power is finally in charge. Most people keep a running list of who can help them and who can hurt them, and they arrange their days around it. Seeing a single hand behind everything drains the fear out of that list, because everyone on it holds their power on loan.

Haybah: Awe Haybah is the awe that comes over someone who senses whose presence they are in. Voices drop the way they do in a hospital hallway, and the ordinary chatter of self-importance goes quiet on its own. Someone who has felt it stops performing, because putting on a show in front of that greatness would be absurd.

God does not look at your forms or your wealth, but at your hearts: standing is inward A saying of the Prophet that the tradition repeats constantly. People size each other up fast by clothes, accent, title, and money, and most of us can feel where we land. Under a gaze that skips all of that, those markers count for nothing, and the only thing left to weigh is what a person wanted and did.

Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity Ikhlāṣ is acting for God alone, with no second motive mixed in. Al-Ghazali writes at length about how tangled ordinary motives are: someone gives money and also wants to be seen giving. When display buys nothing, the work moves inward, to what a person is after when no one is watching.

If I worship you for fear of hell, burn me in hell: love with no deal in it Rabia said this in prayer, and the tradition has repeated it ever since. Much of what passes for devotion runs like a trade, where I do my part and expect the payment to arrive, and the arrangement feels safe. Facing someone who cannot be bought, the trade has nothing to stand on, and what remains is wanting God for his own sake.

Live Deuteronomy 10:17 today

  1. Open your phone and scroll your own posts or photos for a minute, and ask what you were hoping people would think of you. Then set it down without fixing anything.
  2. Today, give your full attention to the person most people in the room would skip: the cleaner, the new hire, the quiet relative, the person at the register. Same voice, same eyes, same patience you would give the important one.
  3. When someone's title or money makes your voice go smaller or your opinion go soft, say the honest thing anyway, kindly. Their power is on loan.

Who have I been quietly ranking, and what would change today if I stopped?

Dhammapada 393

No one becomes worthy through family name, hair, or clothing. What makes a person is truth and the way they actually live.

Bhagavad Gita 9

A leaf, a flower, a little water, offered with real love, is received gladly. The size of the gift is not what is being weighed.
