All Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall not do any more wickedness like this among you.

What does Deuteronomy 13:11 mean?

Whatever a people leaves unlinked to pain, someone will eventually link to pleasure, and that is how nations change gods.

Fear set deliberately does work that private conviction cannot. It attaches a cost to a choice before the choice arrives, and by the time a voice comes offering other gods, the body has already decided: the association sets the state, the state sets the emotion, and the emotion decides what a person will even entertain.

Hearing only changes anything when what is heard lands in the body as something to move away from. Miss that, and the drift starts small: a curiosity, a compromise, and then a generation that cannot remember why the line was ever there. A person who leaves the link unset pays in permissions until the thing they swore they hated is simply the shape of their life.

Live Deuteronomy 13:11 today

  1. Sit down and picture, in detail, where the thing you are flirting with actually ends, five years out, in full color. Honest conviction alone drifts, a cost your body can feel does not.
  2. Tell one trusted person the real price of the drift you are in, out loud, including the part you would rather not say. Spoken to a face, it lands differently than it does in your head.
  3. When the small compromise shows up today, the half truth in the email, the second drink, the message you should not send, name its cost before you answer it. The line holds because the price got attached early.

What have you left with no cost attached to it?

Stoicism · Epictetus

Rehearse the cost of a thing before it tempts you, so the reckoning is already done when the moment arrives. A price known in advance does the deciding for you.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

See clearly where a craving ends and the craving loses its grip. The seeing has to reach the body, not just the opinion.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Weigh the small act against what it is likely to cost you, since what looks minor is how the large thing arrives.
