Deuteronomy 19:3 · World English Bible

Deuteronomy 19:3 Meaning You Shall Prepare the Way

You shall prepare the way, and divide the borders of your land which Yahweh your God causes you to inherit into three parts, that every man slayer may flee there.

What does Deuteronomy 19:3 mean?

Build the road while you are calm, because the person who needs it will be in no state to build anything. Panic narrows focus, narrowed focus destroys judgment, and a man running for his life will take whichever path is in front of him.

Build the road while you are calm, because the person who needs it will be in no state to build anything.

Panic narrows focus, narrowed focus destroys judgment, and a man running for his life will take whichever path is in front of him. So the path has to exist before he does, and it has to be unmistakable, because nothing complicated survives contact with terror.

Receiving land from Yahweh and immediately engineering mercy into its geography is a decision made once, in a clear state, so that it never has to be made again in a ruined one. That is what a system is for. Leaving the borders unmeasured and the roads uncut hands the most consequential decision a person will ever face to the worst hour of their life.

Live Deuteronomy 19:3 today

  1. Set up one thing today for the version of you who will be falling apart. The emergency number saved under a name you will find, the small amount of money moved somewhere separate, the note on the fridge about who to call.
  2. Tell one person they can call you at two in the morning and mean it, then make sure your phone will actually ring. People in trouble take the path that is already in front of them.
  3. When something goes badly today, follow the plan you made on a calm day instead of improvising a new one in the middle of it. Panic is a terrible architect.

What would you want already built and waiting if next month turned out to be your worst one?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca rehearsed hardship in advance, in calm, so that when it came he was not inventing a response in the middle of the storm. The planning is the mercy you show your future self.

Tao Te Ching 64

Act before the trouble appears. What is easy to arrange now becomes impossible to arrange once it is urgent.

Confucius · the Analects

A person without thought for what lies far ahead will be overwhelmed by what is close at hand. The road has to be cut before anyone is running on it.
