Deuteronomy 20:3 Meaning And Shall Tell Them

and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near today to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;

What does Deuteronomy 20:3 mean?

Someone has to speak the words that set a group's state, or fear will set it for them. Fear shows up with its own script already running, and unless a louder voice overwrites it out loud, that script sets the breathing and the posture, the posture sets what feels possible against those numbers, and what feels possible decides whether ground gets taken or given.

Courage is installed by language long before it is displayed in conduct.

Which is why the assignment goes to a priest rather than a general. The words carry because they are anchored to God going out with them, which makes them a report on reality rather than encouragement. Leave that hour silent and fear writes the state unopposed, and the outcome is settled before contact.

Live Deuteronomy 20:3 today

  1. Before the thing you are dreading today, say one true sentence out loud to yourself in the car or the bathroom, something like "I am not alone in this and I can handle it." Say it with your voice, not just in your head, because your body listens to sound differently than to thought.
  2. When someone close to you goes quiet with worry, do not let the silence keep talking. Be the voice in the group chat or at the dinner table that names what is actually true, out loud, instead of waiting for them to pull themselves out of it alone.
  3. In the meeting or the phone call where the numbers look bad, slow your breathing and speak first. The first clear sentence in a tense room sets the state for everyone in it, and if you do not offer one, fear will.

Whose voice has been setting your state lately, and is it telling you the truth?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not the thing itself that shakes us, but the words we tell ourselves about the thing. Change the sentence running in your head and the trembling has nothing left to stand on.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Arjuna's hands go slack at the edge of the battlefield, and what restores him is not a weapon or a troop count but Krishna speaking to him until his inner state turns. The speech comes first, the standing comes after.

Buddhism · Shantideva

Shantideva writes about courage in frankly military language: before facing the enemy within, you rehearse the teaching until the mind is armoured, because a mind that enters the fight unprepared is already half beaten.
