Deuteronomy 29:29 Meaning The Secret Things Belong to Yahweh

The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

What does Deuteronomy 29:29 mean?

There is a hidden greed the mind rarely names: the wish to own the answers, to pry open what was never handed over. A person can spend a life demanding to know why and neglect the plain kindness already in front of them.

There is a hidden greed the mind rarely names: the wish to own the answers, to pry open what was never handed over. A person can spend a life demanding to know why and neglect the plain kindness already in front of them. The cure is humbling: do the small revealed thing today, and leave the locked room shut.

Yet the sealed part is no wall against Him. What is kept back is held in His own keeping, the way a treasure is loved most where no eye has reached it.

Live Deuteronomy 29:29 today

  1. Take the question you keep circling, why this happened, why it was allowed, and set it down for today. Then do the one small kind thing already in front of you instead.
  2. When someone you love is hurting, resist explaining the reason for it. Sit with them, bring food, stay longer than is comfortable, and leave the big question unanswered.
  3. When a decision depends on something you simply cannot know yet, stop running the possibilities. Do the next clear step and let tomorrow stay closed.

What am I refusing to do today until I get an answer I was never going to get?

The way that can be fully stated is not the way. Some of it stays unnamed, and that is its nature, not a gap waiting for you to fill.

Buddhism · the parable of the arrow

A man shot with an arrow demands to know who fired it, from what family, with what sort of bow, before he will let anyone treat the wound. He dies with his questions intact.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He drew one line across everything: some things are up to you and some are not. Peace comes from working your side of it and letting the rest be what it is.
