Deuteronomy 29:4 Meaning But Yahweh Has Not Given You

But Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day.

What does Deuteronomy 29:4 mean?

For all they had witnessed, something in them stayed asleep. A person can see wonders with the eyes and still miss them, because the mind is elsewhere, replaying the past or rehearsing what comes next.

Ego v. Being

For all they had witnessed, something in them stayed asleep. A person can see wonders with the eyes and still miss them, because the mind is elsewhere, replaying the past or rehearsing what comes next. Perceiving is not the same as looking. The heart that takes this moment fully in had not yet awakened in them.

What blocks it is the veil of constant thought that stands between a person and the living present. When that veil thins, ordinary sights and sounds arrive as if for the first time. The eyes were open all along; only now does someone begin to see.

Live Deuteronomy 29:4 today

  1. On your way somewhere today, take the headphones out for five minutes and let the actual sounds in, traffic, birds, somebody's conversation, your own footsteps. Nothing to get from it.
  2. Look at the face of someone you see every day, your partner, your kid, the person at the desk across from you, as though you had just met them. They have changed since you stopped looking.
  3. In the middle of a meeting or a tense call, come back to the feel of your hands and the light in the room for one breath. The whole scene gets sharper when you are actually in it.

What have I been looking at for years without seeing?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

Before awakening, chopping wood and carrying water. After awakening, chopping wood and carrying water. Nothing changes but the one doing it, and that changes everything.

Upanishads

There is a seeing behind the eyes and a hearing behind the ears. The senses point outward, and most people never turn to ask who is looking.

Sufism · Rumi

You wander looking for what you are holding. The water is in the jug you carry while you cry out for a drink.
