Deuteronomy 30:6 · World English Bible

Deuteronomy 30:6 Meaning Yahweh Your God Will Circumcise Your Heart

Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your offspring, to love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.

What does Deuteronomy 30:6 mean?

A hard skin can grow over a heart, a callus of old habits and self-protection that keeps love from passing in or out. The promise is that the One who made the heart will do the cutting Himself, peeling back what a person could never remove alone.

Sufism

A hard skin can grow over a heart, a callus of old habits and self-protection that keeps love from passing in or out. The promise is that the One who made the heart will do the cutting Himself, peeling back what a person could never remove alone. A share still remains: stop defending the callus, sit in honest sorrow over it, and ask for it to be taken.

The love this points toward is His own, given first so it can return to Him. The spring and the stream that flows back to it are one water.

Live Deuteronomy 30:6 today

  1. Sit for five quiet minutes and let yourself feel sorry about the one way you have gone hard, the cold tone, the shut door, the grudge. No fixing it, no defending it, just admitting it and asking for it to be taken.
  2. With one person you have kept at arm's length, drop the guard by a single inch today: answer the message honestly, say the thing you usually keep back, let them see you were hurt.
  3. When someone gets your defenses up today, in traffic, in a meeting, in a group chat, stay soft for one more breath before you respond. Softness there is not weakness.

Where have I gone hard to protect myself, and what has it been keeping out?

Tao Te Ching 76

What is soft and yielding is alive, and what has gone stiff and hard belongs to death. A hardened person is not strong, only brittle.

Judaism · Hasidic (the Kotzker Rebbe)

Nothing is as whole as a broken heart. The cracked place is where something can finally get in.

Bhagavad Gita 18

Krishna tells Arjuna to let go of the whole weight and come to him, and says he will do the freeing. The surrender is the part that belongs to the person.
