Deuteronomy 32:15 Meaning But Jeshurun Grew Fat

But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked. You have grown fat. You have grown thick. You have become sleek. Then he abandoned God who made him, and rejected the Rock of his salvation.

What does Deuteronomy 32:15 mean?

Prosperity tests a person harder than hunger does, because it takes away the one thing that was doing the moving.

Devotion that runs on need is a contract with hunger. The want held the belief that God was the only supply, the belief set the state, the state produced the clinging. Remove the want and every link behind it comes apart.

Nothing was decided here; it dissolved, and the kicking is that collapse surfacing. Loyalty that survives abundance has to be chosen while the table is full and backed by action, or comfort cancels it without an argument. A man who skips that leaves himself standing on a Rock he has stopped speaking to, and he will relearn it from zero in the next famine.

Live Deuteronomy 32:15 today

  1. Pick one good thing in your life you have stopped mentioning, your health, your rent being paid, someone who still answers your texts, and say thank you for it out loud while you are alone in the car or doing the dishes.
  2. Call or text one person you only ever reached out to when you needed something. Ask how they are and ask nothing of them.
  3. When something goes wrong today, a delay, a bill, a hard meeting, catch the moment you start kicking at whatever has been carrying you, and name one thing it has actually given you before you say anything else.

What in my life am I still quietly leaning on and no longer talking to?

Tao Te Ching 9

Fill a cup to the brim and it spills. A blade kept too sharp dulls fastest, and a house packed with treasure cannot be guarded, so the full table is the dangerous hour, not the empty one.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca warned that prosperity makes a person soft without ever announcing itself as an enemy. He practiced days of deliberate plain food and hard beds while rich, so that comfort could not quietly take the steering.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Who is rich? The one who is glad with what he has. Gladness is a practice a person keeps up on purpose, not a feeling that arrives automatically once the accounts are good.
