Deuteronomy 4:2 Meaning You Shall Not Add to the Word

You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God which I command you.

What does Deuteronomy 4:2 mean?

The word not to be added to or cut from is the desired state itself, taken as it is and occupied fully rather than tinkered with and deferred. To add is to keep improving the wish, to diminish is to shrink it toward what seems reasonable, and both are ways of refusing to live in it now.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The word not to be added to or cut from is the desired state itself, taken as it is and occupied fully rather than tinkered with and deferred. To add is to keep improving the wish, to diminish is to shrink it toward what seems reasonable, and both are ways of refusing to live in it now. Keeping the commandment is simply dwelling in the assumption exactly as given, whole and unedited.

Behind this stands the single loyalty that matters, service to I AM alone rather than to any outside power. A person reaches the fulfillment he wants by inhabiting the state cleanly, neither padding it nor bargaining it down. The state assumed and felt as already so is the word that must be kept intact. A wish left exactly as desired, and lived in, is a wish already on its way to fact.

Live Deuteronomy 4:2 today

  1. Take the one thing you actually want and stop editing it today. No reasonable version, no bigger version, just the thing as it first came to you, held as already yours.
  2. When you tell someone your hope out loud, resist shrinking it so it sounds safer. Say it the size it really is.
  3. In a tense call or a negotiation, catch the urge to talk yourself down to what seems likely. Stay with what you came in wanting and speak from there.

Where am I trimming what I want so it sounds more reasonable?

Tao Te Ching 48

The way is kept by taking away, not by adding. Each improvement you bolt on moves you further from the thing itself.

Zen

A full cup takes nothing more. Leave the teaching as it was given, do not dress it up, and it works.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not ask for things to be as you wish. Take the thing as it is, whole, and live in it. The bargaining is what keeps you outside it.
