Deuteronomy 5:14 Meaning But the Seventh Day Is a Sabbath

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God, in which you shall not do any work— neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

What does Deuteronomy 5:14 mean?

The command to rest is far deeper than a rule about a single day. Six days the world of form pulls you into doing, and doing easily turns compulsive, a movement of the mind that will not let you simply be.

Ego v. Being

The command to rest is far deeper than a rule about a single day. Six days the world of form pulls you into doing, and doing easily turns compulsive, a movement of the mind that will not let you simply be. The seventh day is a doorway. To cease from work is to feel the stillness underneath all activity, the dimension of Being that was there the whole time.

Everyone rests, servant, stranger, even the animals. This peace is not a wage earned by the worthy. It is the ground beneath every doing, and it opens to anyone the moment the doing stops.

Live Deuteronomy 5:14 today

  1. Take twenty minutes today with no screen, no podcast, no useful outcome. Not a reward for finishing, just a stop.
  2. Give someone else a real break too. Take the dishes, cover the errand, tell the person working for you to go home on time.
  3. When your hands reach for the phone the second a task ends, let that gap stay empty for one minute. The urge to fill it will tell you a lot.

What are you afraid you would feel if you stopped?

Tao Te Ching 11

The wheel is useful because of the empty space at the hub, the room because of the space inside. The nothing is what makes the something work.

Taoism · Wu wei

The way is to stop forcing, and things get done anyway. Compulsive doing is not the same as living.

Sit quietly, and spring comes, and the grass grows by itself. Nothing in you needs to be driven for life to continue.
