Deuteronomy 5:16 · World English Bible

Deuteronomy 5:16 Meaning Honor Your Father and Your Mother

Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

What does Deuteronomy 5:16 mean?

To honour a father and mother is to admit that no one invents himself. Someone fed the child before the child could feed himself, and someone spoke before the child could speak.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

To honour a father and mother is to admit that no one invents himself. Someone fed the child before the child could feed himself, and someone spoke before the child could speak. A man who refuses that debt cuts the root he grew from, and a severed root cannot be prolonged into any future.

The promise attached here is not sentimental. A people who despise where they came from cannot hold the land they stand on, because contempt for the past is contempt for the order that made the present possible. Gratitude to those who raised you is the first honest map of the world. Honour what carried you, and you become strong enough to carry what comes next.

Live Deuteronomy 5:16 today

  1. Think of one specific thing you can do because someone taught you it, how to cook something, how to drive, how to apologize. Say the name of who gave it to you, even just in your head on the commute.
  2. Text or call a parent, or whoever raised you, and name one concrete thing instead of a general thank you. "I still make the soup the way you showed me" lands harder than "thanks for everything."
  3. When old family frustration flares up at dinner or in a group chat, hold both at once: the thing they got wrong, and the fact that you ate because of them. You can be honest about one without erasing the other.

What do I use every day that I never had to invent?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · Analects

Respect for parents is the root, and once the root is set the rest of a person's character grows from it. A life cut from its source has nothing to draw on.

Buddhism · Anguttara Nikaya

The Buddha said a child could carry both parents on their shoulders for a hundred years and still not repay what was given. The debt is not meant to be cleared, only honored.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Your part is to be a good son or daughter, whatever kind of parent you were handed. Their failures do not release you from your own role.
