SUFISM

Sufism

God speaks from inside the fire, and the fire does not consume the ones who listen. The heart's temptation is to want the meeting without the burning, to receive truth while keeping every comfortable habit. The cure is honest self-examination: staying in the flame long enough to let it burn away what is false.

Face to face means nothing stands between the Speaker and the one who hears. The fire that frightens and the presence that draws near are one reality from two sides. The mountain is only where a heart holds still enough to listen.

Live Deuteronomy 5:4 today

  1. Sit with the thing about yourself you least want to look at, just for a few minutes, without fixing it or explaining it away. Staying there is the whole exercise.
  2. Let one person today tell you something true about you that is hard to hear, and do not defend yourself. Just say thank you and sit with it afterward.
  3. When something goes wrong today, a plan falls apart or someone is upset with you, stay in the discomfort for a full minute before you reach for your phone or a snack or a distraction.

What would you have to let burn away to meet God without anything in between?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 11

Arjuna asks to see God directly, and when the full form appears it terrifies him and he begs for the gentler face back. The closeness he wanted and the fear he felt turn out to be the same meeting.

Zen

The teaching says to pass through the gate you have to drop what you are carrying. Nothing can come between you and the truth except the baggage you refuse to set down.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca wrote that fire tests gold and hardship tests people. He treated the burning as the part that shows what is actually there.
