Deuteronomy 5:6 · World English Bible

Deuteronomy 5:6 Meaning I Am Yahweh Your God

I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

What does Deuteronomy 5:6 mean?

Before it is anything else, the divine announces itself first of all as I am. This is not a distant deity but the presence of awareness itself, the aliveness of being that is here in you this very moment, before your name and your story.

Ego v. Being

Before it is anything else, the divine announces itself first of all as I am. This is not a distant deity but the presence of awareness itself, the aliveness of being that is here in you this very moment, before your name and your story.

And what does this presence do? It brings you out of bondage. The real house of slavery is not a place but a state of mind: compulsive thinking, old grievances, the fear that runs your life while you sleep inside your own head. The awareness that says I am is what wakes you from that captivity. Recognize it, and you walk out of a prison you did not know you were in.

Live Deuteronomy 5:6 today

  1. Before the first scroll of the day, sit up and feel that you exist for one breath, before any thought about the day arrives. That is who is about to live it.
  2. When an old grievance comes up about someone, say to yourself quietly that this is a thought playing again, not the person in front of you. Then stay in the actual conversation.
  3. In a pressured moment, ask what is actually happening right now versus what your head is predicting. The prison is almost always in the prediction.

Which of your walls did you build yourself?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Upanishads

Before the name and the story, there is simply the awareness that you are. That is the ground, not the biography.

Buddhism

The mind creates its own prison and then forgets it built the walls. Seeing this clearly is the door.

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not events that bind you but your judgments about them. The chain is made of thought, which is why it can be set down.
