Consistency is an engineering problem: build a house where the thing you value keeps walking back into view.

Willpower is the most expensive way to stay faithful and the first thing to fail under stress. Design is cheap and never gets tired. Put God's words where the eye must cross them and repetition does the work: what is seen daily becomes what is felt, what is felt hardens into belief, and belief runs the hands long after anyone stopped deciding consciously.

Doorposts and gates are thresholds, the seam between the house and the street, which is where a person changes who they are being. Marking the crossings catches them at the moment attention is loosest. Leave the surroundings to chance and a person gets shaped anyway, by whatever somebody else put in the frame.

Live Deuteronomy 6:9 today

  1. Put one line you want to live by where you cannot miss it, lock screen, bathroom mirror, the inside of the front door. Let the room remind you so you do not have to.
  2. Ask someone to change one shared space with you, the note on the fridge, the thing you say at the table, the phones in a basket at dinner. Shared surroundings hold better than private promises.
  3. On the days you have nothing left, lean on the setup instead of your resolve, the alarm, the note, the thing already in your bag. Design is cheap and it never gets tired.

What are the things you look at every day quietly turning you into?

Tao Te Ching 63

Handle the great while it is still small and the hard while it is still easy. Arrange things early so the right move takes no struggle later.

Buddhism

The Buddha told his students to choose their place and their company with care, because surroundings shape the mind more than resolve does. A good environment carries you when discipline runs out.

Stoicism · Seneca

Keep your reminders where your eyes fall and read them again. Willpower tires, a well placed line does not.
