Deuteronomy 7:6 · World English Bible

Deuteronomy 7:6 Meaning For You Are a Holy People

For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God. Yahweh your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.

What does Deuteronomy 7:6 mean?

Tell people what they are before you tell them what to do, or the doing never holds. Standards that hold are downstream of a status a person already believes they have.

Tell people what they are before you tell them what to do, or the doing never holds.

Standards that hold are downstream of a status a person already believes they have. Being told what they are, before a single command about conduct, sets the belief; the belief sets the state they live in; the state sets what feels natural, and separate conduct stops being sacrifice and becomes housekeeping.

A people who think of themselves as ordinary drift toward whatever the surrounding nations do, because behavior migrates toward the label. Yahweh does not ask them to earn the title and then hand it over; He assigns it first, and every demand that follows is a request to act like what they have already been told they are. What that costs is the excuse of being average.

Live Deuteronomy 7:6 today

  1. Before you check anything on your phone in the morning, say one true sentence about who you are to God, not about what you have to get done. The order matters, because the first thing you tell yourself sets the rest of the hours.
  2. With your kid or a friend who is struggling, lead with what they are, loved, yours, not slipping, before you say a word about what they should do differently. Watch how much less you have to push afterward.
  3. In the meeting or the group chat where you usually shrink to match the room, hold your own register instead of borrowing theirs. Behavior drifts toward whatever label you are quietly wearing, so wear the real one.

If you truly believed you belonged to God, which thing you are forcing would become ordinary?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Chandogya Upanishad

The teaching that you already are what you are seeking changes the seeking entirely. Conduct follows from knowing your nature, not from straining toward it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

First say what you are, then act accordingly, the way an athlete behaves like an athlete before any race is won. The role sets the behavior.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Know where you come from and whose you are, and much of the argument about how to live quietly settles itself.
