Ego v. Being

When someone in power turns on you in anger, everything in you wants to defend yourself and strike back. But do not leave your place. Your place is not a position in an argument. It is the still, aware presence within you that no one's anger can touch unless you abandon it.

Anger feeds on reaction. When you meet another's rising ego with your own, you pour fuel on the fire and the offense grows. But when you stay rooted in stillness and yield instead of fighting back, you give the anger nothing to push against. Without your resistance to sustain it, even great offences lose their force and settle.

Māna: Conceit Māna is the mind's habit of measuring itself against others. When a ruler's temper rises against you, the urge to walk out rarely comes from principle; it comes from the sting of being made small while people are watching. See the sting for what it is and most of the force drains out of the exit, and you find you can stand there after all.

Gocara: One's own pasture Gocara is the home ground a practitioner keeps to. Leaving your place under pressure can feel like dignity and behave like panic, the way a small bird that bolts from its own field into open sky is the one the hawk takes. Your place is the work in front of you and the attention you can hold steady, and staying on it is what keeps you safe.

Khanti: Patient endurance Khanti is the strength to bear what stings without hitting back. A temper spends itself when nothing feeds it, so remaining where you are while it blows over is the cheapest way through the hour. One hot reply to someone who holds power over you can cost more than a whole afternoon of swallowed discomfort, and the discomfort is over by evening.

Soracca: Mildness of bearing Soracca is an unprovocative way of carrying yourself. Mildness of this kind has nothing to do with weakness; a soft answer is the one thing a rising temper can get no grip on. Keep your voice low and your face level, and the quarrel is left with only one person in it.

Avera: Freedom from enmity Avera is the absence of hostility. Great offenses stay great only while both hands keep pulling, so letting go of your end of the rope ends the contest whatever the other person intended. Gentleness lays the matter to rest by handing him no fresh injury to answer, and a grievance with nothing added to it goes quiet on its own.

Live Ecclesiastes 10:4 today

  1. Read the angry message twice and do not reply for an hour. Feel the pull to defend yourself and let it pass without typing.
  2. When your partner or a family member snaps at dinner, do not match their tone. Stay calm and stay in the room. The heat has nothing to burn on.
  3. If your boss comes at you hard in front of others, keep your voice level and your feet still. You can hear a complaint without handing over your steadiness.

Where does your calm actually come from, if someone else's mood can take it away?
