Anicca: Impermanence

Childhood and youth are vanity because they are already slipping through the hand that tries to hold them. Everything green passes, and knowing the morning does not last is the very reason to set down grief today. The fleeting quality of these years becomes the very ground for letting worry go.

Nekkhamma: Renunciation

Remove sorrow, put away evil, is the plain work of laying two burdens down. Renunciation is setting aside what weighs on the heart and the body the way you take off a wet coat at the door. The letting go is the whole instruction, one hand for grief and one for harm.

Appamāda: Heedfulness

Because the young years vanish, the counsel is to live them with care rather than waste them on sorrow. Heedfulness is the awake attention that does not sleepwalk through a short season, spending each day well because there are not many. The passing of youth sharpens the call to keep the heart clear now.

Live Ecclesiastes 11:10 today

  1. Pick the one worry you have been carrying around all week and set it down for an hour on purpose. Say the hour out loud, go for a walk or wash the dishes, and let it wait outside like a coat on a hook.
  2. If there is someone you have been quietly holding a grudge against, in a group chat, at work, in the family, let it go today rather than next year. You do not have to announce it. Just answer them warmly the next time they speak.
  3. When the pressure hits and you feel the urge to be sharp with someone, think of how short the season is that you are spending on this mood. Then pick the kinder sentence, which is almost always the shorter one.

What have you been carrying so long you forgot you could put it down?

Tao Te Ching

Lao Tzu says a whirlwind does not last the whole morning, nor a downpour the whole day. If nature cannot keep up its own storms, your grief is not built to last either, so stop feeding it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus told himself to throw away the opinion and the hurt goes with it, since what wounds a person is the judgment added to the event. He paired that with how little time was left, which is why the dropping had to happen today.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi pictures the heart as a guest house where sorrow arrives, stays, and leaves like any other visitor. You meet it at the door, you do not hand it the deed.
