Ecclesiastes 11:4 Meaning He Who Observes the Wind Won’t Sow

He who observes the wind won’t sow; and he who regards the clouds won’t reap.

What does Ecclesiastes 11:4 mean?

Ghayb: The Unseen Ghayb is what God keeps hidden from us. Someone who holds back from acting usually wants a guarantee first, some sign that the effort will pay off, and that sign never arrives.

Ghayb: The Unseen Ghayb is what God keeps hidden from us. Someone who holds back from acting usually wants a guarantee first, some sign that the effort will pay off, and that sign never arrives. Waiting to be sure before starting leaves a person standing in place while the hours run out.

I am as my servant thinks I am: expectation colors what a person meets God speaks these words through the Prophet. Someone who keeps hunting for reasons a plan will fail has already settled the answer in advance, and the caution passes for wisdom. Thinking well of God loosens that grip, so a person begins the work expecting good from a generous hand.

Tawakkul: Trust in God Tawakkul, leaning on God, sits in the heart for al-Ghazali while the hands go on working. The Prophet told a man to tie his camel first, then trust God. Someone frozen by risk has turned trust into waiting for the danger to pass, when trust is what lets him move anyway.

Waqt: The present moment Waqt is the moment at hand, the one piece of time a person holds. The Sufis say the seeker is the son of the moment, meaning the task in front of him now is his whole assignment. A mind busy with next month is somewhere else, and the hour it was given goes by unused.

Himma: The heart's resolve Himma, a word Ibn Arabi returns to often, is the heart gathered and aimed at one thing. Weighing can go on forever, since circumstances never look perfect and doubt keeps finding fresh material. Resolve ends the weighing by choosing and starting, and the plan a hesitant person keeps turning over is one a resolved person has already begun.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

The hardest work most people do is the work of postponing a decision while calling it preparation.

Watching conditions gives the body the feeling of diligence with none of the exposure, and the feeling is the trap. Fear of sowing wrong sets a studying state, the studying state produces more study, and a year of accurate observation ends with bare ground.

Every choice runs on what a person moves toward and away from, and the risk of a wasted bag of seed is immediate while hunger is months out, so the body keeps voting for one more day of looking. Wind and clouds never resolve into certainty, which is the unspoken condition the watcher waits on. The planting window closes without anyone choosing to close it, and a preference nobody ever called a decision has settled the year.

Live Ecclesiastes 11:4 today

  1. Take the thing you have been researching for weeks and do the first ten-minute piece of it today, before you feel ready. Open the document, write the first paragraph, make the call.
  2. Send the message you keep drafting to the person you have drifted from. You cannot know how it will land, and waiting until you can know means never sending it.
  3. When a decision at work has no clear right answer and the clock is running, pick the reasonable option and start. Endless weighing feels responsible and costs you the hour you were given.

What am I waiting to be sure about, and what would I do today if certainty were never coming?

Tao Te Ching 64

A journey of a thousand miles begins under your feet. The great work is only ever the small act taken now, not the perfect conditions arriving later.

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. The person who waits for every risk to clear has already lived through losses that never came.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Set your hand to the work and release your grip on the result. Paralysis dressed up as caution is still a choice, and a costly one.
