CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Approaching what is highest is dangerous, and most people rush in careless. The reckless pay for it. To stand before the sacred asking to be heard, chattering demands and staging gestures, is to arrive backward. The posture that fits the encounter is silence and attention, the readiness to receive a correction rather than deliver a demand.

The sacrifice of fools is loud, performed, and empty, made by a man so busy displaying his devotion that he never notices the harm in his own heart. He considers not that he does evil, and that is exactly the trouble. Reverence begins with listening, because listening admits you do not already have the answer. Come to what is greater than yourself prepared to be changed by it, not to instruct it. The wise man closes his mouth before he opens it.

Live Ecclesiastes 5:1 today

  1. Before you walk into anything that matters today, stand still for thirty seconds with your mouth closed and your phone down. Arrive on purpose rather than skidding in mid sentence.
  2. In one conversation, hold back the reply you already have ready and ask a second question instead. Let the person finish, and let what they say actually land on you.
  3. When someone criticizes you today and everything in you wants to defend, say only: let me think about that. Then actually think about it, instead of performing how reasonable you are.

Where in my life am I doing all the talking because I am afraid of what I might hear?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

Those who truly know do not fill the air with talk, and those who talk endlessly do not know. Silence is where understanding has room to arrive.

Zen

A cup already full can receive nothing. Come empty if you want to be given anything.

Sufism · Rumi

Quiet the voice that is always answering, and you may finally hear what is being said to you. Listening is the harder half of any real meeting.
