Ego v. Being

A person rooted in the present hardly counts the passing years. Memory loosens its grip because there is no need to hoard the past when the moment itself is full. The joy welling up in the heart is the answer, and it belongs to now, not to what was or what might be.

Most lives are spent adding up days, measuring gain and loss on some inner ledger. The counting stops. When a deeper aliveness takes its place, someone who tastes the joy at the center of this moment no longer keeps score, because the present is enough.

Live Ecclesiastes 5:20 today

  1. Pick one ordinary thing today, your coffee, the walk to the car, and give it your whole attention for its full length, without reaching for your phone to fill the gap.
  2. When someone asks how your week has been, resist the summary and the scorecard. Tell them one real thing that is happening right now instead.
  3. On a day that feels behind, stop and feel your feet on the floor for ten seconds. The hour you are actually in is not short on anything.

What would today feel like if you were not keeping score of it?

The same truth in other traditions

Zhuangzi

The one who lives fully in each moment does not measure life by its length. A morning mushroom and an ancient pine both have exactly enough.

Zen · Dogen

When you are completely present in the act itself, there is no before and after to tally. The moment is whole, and nothing is missing from it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Even a short life, lived with full attention, is complete. What you have is this hour, and it is sufficient.
