Ecclesiastes 8:17 Meaning Then I Saw All the Work

then I saw all the work of God, that man can’t find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won’t find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won’t be able to find it.

What does Ecclesiastes 8:17 mean?

Existence refuses the mind, because the mind divides and what it looks at has no seams. A man can labor a whole life gathering explanations, and each one closes over the mystery like a lid.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Existence refuses the mind, because the mind divides and what it looks at has no seams. A man can labor a whole life gathering explanations, and each one closes over the mystery like a lid. The wise man is in deeper trouble than the fool: he believes his conclusion, and belief taken as knowing ends the inquiry.

The failure to find is the doorway. When thinking exhausts itself and grows quiet, awareness is already there, watching, and the same sun and the same work become a wonder rather than a problem waiting to be solved. Live it, celebrate it, and drop the demand that it explain itself.

Live Ecclesiastes 8:17 today

  1. Let one question stay open today instead of searching it. Carry the not knowing for a few hours and see whether it is actually uncomfortable or just unfamiliar.
  2. In a conversation, say "I don't know" once and mean it, with no theory tacked on afterward. Then stay curious about what the other person says next instead of defending a position.
  3. When something at work goes sideways and no explanation fits, stop hunting for the cause for ten minutes. Do the next practical thing while leaving the why unsettled.

Where have you been treating a conclusion as the end of the question?

Tao Te Ching 1

The Tao that can be put into words is not the Tao. The moment you name it, you are holding the label and not the thing.

Zen

Not knowing is the most intimate. A beginner's mind is open; an expert's mind is already full and has quietly stopped looking.

The one who says he knows it does not. The one who says he does not know is nearer, because the mystery is not the kind of thing a thought can hold.
