Ecclesiastes 9:16 Meaning Then I Said

Then I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” Nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Something in the crowd bows to power before it listens to truth. Wealth, rank, a sure voice: we see these and assume wisdom lives there too. So when insight comes from someone with nothing, from a person already counted as small, the words go unheard. Worth was pinned to the outer figure long before the message could be weighed.

A man might say the wisest thing in the room, yet with no title he is barely seen. People are not judging his thought. They are judging his standing, and once that looks poor they stop listening, however true he is.

  1. Think back over the week for a good idea you dismissed because of who said it, the new hire, the younger cousin, the person you find annoying. Give it a fair second look.
  2. In your next meeting or family conversation, deliberately draw out the quietest person. Ask them directly what they think, then let the silence sit until they answer.
  3. When you have something true to say and no standing in the room, say it anyway and calmly, without padding it or apologizing for yourself first. Being unheard once is not a reason to stop.

Whose voice have you been discounting because of where they stand rather than what they said?

Tao Te Ching 41

The deepest teaching often sounds foolish, and the greatest sound is nearly silent. What is true rarely arrives dressed impressively.

Zen

A student once learned more from the temple cook than from the famous master. Wisdom does not check your rank before it chooses a mouth to speak from.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He was born a slave and taught emperors. Judge the argument, not the robe on the person making it.
