Ego v. Being

The mind that has searched everything and found it wearying now discovers something simpler. To eat your bread and drink your wine with a glad heart is to stop postponing life until some future arrangement is complete. The next meal, the ordinary morning, this breath: here is where your life actually is, and here is where you can be fully awake to it.

Joy is not the reward waiting at the end of your striving. It rises the moment you give your full attention to what is already in front of you. And so acceptance comes now, in the present, because presence is the only place anything is ever truly received.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Anicca: Impermanence Everything that rises also passes away. The bread on your table will be gone by nightfall, and the hand that lifts the wine will not lift it forever, which is the very reason you are sent to eat and drink now. Because the meal cannot be saved for later, taste it fully while it sits warm in front of you, since the shortness of the day is what makes the bread sweet.

Sati: Mindfulness A steady presence with whatever is in front of you. Eating bread with joy asks you to sit at the table where the bread is, instead of chewing on yesterday's accounts or tomorrow's worries. Taste the grain, feel the cup warm in your hands, and let the "now" of the meal be the only place you stand, since gladness arrives once you are all the way here for it.

Pīti: Joy A bright gladness that lifts body and mind together. This is the merry heart raised over the wine, the small rush of delight when a good drink meets a light mood, and it breaks out just as readily over plain bread on an ordinary evening. Let that brightness rise while you eat and drink, and a common table with a loaf and a cup turns into a small feast.

Santuṭṭhi: Contentment Being satisfied with what is already on the table. Bread and wine are everyday fare rather than a king's banquet, and yet they hold plenty for a whole day's joy. When the plain loaf before you is enough on its own, you quit reaching past it for something richer, and a settled heart lays a full feast with nothing more than bread and a cup.

Upekkhā: Equanimity An even, level peace of mind. Since the works are already accepted and approved, nothing is left to chase or prove, and the striving hand can finally lay itself down on the table. A mind still bargaining for approval cannot taste its own bread, so go your way in that calm, and both the eating and the drinking come easy.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

The permission comes before the pleasure. That order matters. A man cannot enjoy his bread while he is still waiting to be found acceptable, still auditioning for approval. The acceptance is granted first, in the present tense, and only a person who takes it in can taste the meal at all.

So the joy is not squeezed out of the food by effort. The moment the inner verdict changes and a person stops standing trial over his own works, the pleasure is simply free. A settled self-image can sit down to ordinary bread and find it a feast.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Religion has been sad for so long that joy now looks irreligious. Eating with delight and drinking with a glad heart is not a lapse from the spiritual life but the direct entry into it, because a happy man is not divided against himself.

Acceptance is not a wage earned by good works. Existence has already received the life it gave, so the whole anxious accounting can be put down, and then ordinary bread tastes of something. The man who eats his meal totally, present in the chewing, is closer to prayer than the one fasting to buy heaven.

Live Ecclesiastes 9:7 today

  1. Make your breakfast slowly and pay attention to the whole of it, the warmth of the mug, the first bite, instead of scrolling through it.
  2. When someone you love is in the room, put the phone down and be there with them for ten minutes. Not later, when things quiet down.
  3. Doing the dishes or folding laundry, drop the idea that real life starts after this and give the task your hands and your attention.

What are you waiting to be settled before you let yourself enjoy your life?

A student asked about the way. The teacher said, have you eaten? Then go wash your bowl. The life you are looking for is in the next plain act.
