Ephesians 2:5 Meaning Even When We Were Dead Through

even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—

What does Ephesians 2:5 mean?

To be dead in sin is to be spiritually asleep, alive in body yet lost in the mind, moving through your days without ever being truly present. In that state you are run entirely by conditioned thought and reaction, and you do not even know it.

Ego v. Being

To be dead in sin is to be spiritually asleep, alive in body yet lost in the mind, moving through your days without ever being truly present. In that state you are run entirely by conditioned thought and reaction, and you do not even know it. This is the deadness so many people mistake for a normal life.

To be made alive is to awaken, to come into presence and know yourself as the conscious awareness beneath all thinking. And notice that this happens by grace, not by effort. The ego cannot lift itself into awakening, because the ego is what must dissolve. Awakening comes when you stop striving and allow presence to arise, and that allowing is the grace that saves you.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Death here is not the grave but the sleeping state of a consciousness fixed wholly on the flesh, unaware of the higher mind buried within it. To be dead in sins is to run on appetite and reaction with the inner light dormant, and to be quickened is that light waking inside the same body, no arrival from outside but a rising of what was always present. Grace names the free, unforced way this awakening comes: it cannot be earned by effort of the lower self, because the flesh cannot lift itself.

Christ is the anointed mind, the oil in the head that opens the eye once it is stirred. What quickens the person is his own dormant divinity turning on, and salvation is simply that inner change from sleep to awareness while still walking the earth.

Christ: the anointed higher mind hidden in every skull, the inner light that wakes the sleeping body to itself

Live Ephesians 2:5 today

  1. For two minutes this morning, before you open a single app, sit still and do nothing at all. Not to achieve a calm state, just to stop adding. Whatever arrives, arrives.
  2. In one conversation today, drop the effort to manage how you come across. Let the pause be a little long. Let yourself be seen without polishing yourself first.
  3. When you hit the wall at work, the deadline, the inbox, the problem you cannot solve, stop pushing for one minute. Put your hands flat on the desk, feel them there, and let the pushing end before you try again.

What am I straining for today that can only arrive when I stop straining?

The way is not reached by adding more. It is reached by subtracting, until striving falls away and things get done without force.

Zen

Trying to grasp awakening is like trying to grab water. You cannot pull yourself into stillness by force, because the one pulling is the problem.

You do not have to search for light. Take down the wall you built, and the light is simply there, as it always was.
